cliffe hill does Strictly Come Dancing
This year saw Cliffe Hill's very first Strictly Come Dancing competition. Diane Lightowler, a Governor at the school, came to watch and wrote the following about the event:
What a fabulous evening!
The current education agenda places much emphasis on reading, writing, and mathematics, and I agree that these skills are essential if children are to succeed in their adult lives. However, educating our children involves much more than these basic skills. As a governor at Cliffe Hill Community School, I am immensely proud that our curriculum prepares our children for adult life by developing other essential skills and attributes, including: self - confidence; resilience; social skills; communication skills; and a love of learning. The Strictly Cliffe Hill event reflected this, and showed just what makes our school special.
Over the last half-term, Year 5 have taken part in dance lessons, learning a selection of both ballroom and Latin dances. The lessons culminated in the Strictly Cliffe Hill evening. All pupils took part in the competition, and performed the jive, cha- cha- cha, waltz, and tango. Now, as an amateur dancer myself, I can safely say that these dances are not easy! The children showed remarkable maturity, and performed in a truly professional manner. Their concentration, and sheer enjoyment at performing in front of an audience of family and friends was a joy to see. All had made a great effort to dress in the strictly style – boys wonderfully smart in waistcoats and jackets, and girls with sequins and posh frocks!
At the end of the performances, the winners were awarded their prizes. The children were supportive of each other, and those who didn’t win were just happy to have taken part. The evening finished with family and friends being invited to join the children on the dance floor for the last dance. The hall was packed, and the atmosphere was lovely. A real family event.
Many thanks to the staff who organised the event, and many thanks to the children for a very special evening.
